Icelandic Poppy
Greetings from Iceland, the land of fire and ice! It hard not to be inspired by nature surrounded by this landscape. As we watch the trees, grasses and moss return to their verdant hues, the painted homes in yellows, blues and reds add an additional layer of colour across the panorama. The blue purple hues of lupin, pinks and whites of roses and yellows of buttercups have emerged all over the city. With all this colour playing in every vista, it got me thinking about a flower that personifies this symphony. The choice was an easy one, the Icelandic Poppy! This gorgeous flower presents itself in whites, corals, oranges, pinks, yellows and all sherbet like colours in between. Aptly named and impossible not to smile when admiring its crinkled and creased delicate petals.
The study began with the incredible poppy centers which really are the focal point of the flower. I explored several different variations and I am excited to share their subtle differences with you!
Next we have the colouration of the petals. You will learn to create the flowers from peachy pinks, to white with magenta margins, and lastly, the fiery orange-red varieties which symbolize the molten lava of the extraordinary volcanic eruptions here.
The colours are a slice of life in Iceland and I am thrilled to show you how to achieve them all! To take this one step further, I'll be showing you a technique to keep the petals light and airy but still highly shapeable so that you can accurately reproduce their wrinkled and crinkled petals. This flower packs a lot of paper techniques into one long elegant stem.
This flower utilizes high quality Italian crepe papers from Carte Fini.
